Sixteen people, one permit
Ryan won a Grand Canyon river permit in the lottery, so sixteen of us ran it ourselves: five rafts, three kayaks and a paddleboard.

Most people who float the Grand Canyon go with an outfitter. The other way in is the permit lottery, where you bring your own boats and run the river yourselves. Ryan put in for it and won.
Sixteen of us launched in late September 2025: five rafts, three kayaks, and Casey on a paddleboard for about half of it. We cooked for ourselves and read our own water.
